The Emerald Tree Skink (Lamprolepis smaragdina), also known as the Green Tree Skink, is a beautiful arboreal lizard native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. In the wild, this species inhabits humid forests, coastal vegetation, palm trees, and even human-altered environments, where it spends most of its time climbing tree trunks and foliage. Adults typically reach 7–10 inches in total length, with long, slender tails and vivid green coloration that may include subtle spotting or pattern variation. With proper care, Emerald Tree Skinks can live 7–12 years or longer in captivity.

Because this species is highly arboreal, enclosure design should emphasize vertical space rather than floor area. A tall, well-ventilated terrarium measuring at least 18 x 18 x 36 inches is recommended for a single adult, though larger enclosures are strongly encouraged. The enclosure should be filled with branches, vines, cork bark, and dense foliage to provide climbing opportunities and security. Multiple elevated basking and resting areas should be included, as Emerald Tree Skinks prefer to perch off the ground. A moisture-retaining substrate such as coconut fiber, soil-based jungle mixes, orchid bark, or a combination of these works well, especially when topped with leaf litter to help maintain humidity.

Temperature gradients are essential for proper thermoregulation. A basking area should be maintained at approximately 90–95°F (32–35°C), while ambient daytime temperatures should range between 78–86°F (26–30°C). Nighttime temperatures may safely drop into the low 70s°F (20–22°C). Full-spectrum UVB lighting is required to support calcium metabolism and overall health, with a low-percentage T5 UVB bulb recommended for arboreal species. Lights should be provided on a 12-hour day/night cycle.

Emerald Tree Skinks thrive in moderately high humidity, ideally between 65–80%. Daily misting is recommended to maintain humidity levels and provide drinking opportunities, as these skinks often prefer to lick water droplets from leaves rather than drink from a dish. A shallow water bowl may be offered and placed higher in the enclosure, though it is often secondary to misting.

This species is primarily insectivorous. A varied diet consisting of appropriately sized gut-loaded insects such as dubia roaches, crickets, discoid roaches, mealworms, and hornworms should be offered. Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults can be fed every other day. Insects should be dusted with calcium at most feedings, with a reptile multivitamin offered one to two times per month. Some individuals may accept soft fruits or commercial crested gecko diet as an occasional enrichment item, but these should never replace insects as the main diet.

Emerald Tree Skinks are diurnal and highly active, often observed basking, climbing, and exploring throughout the day. While generally non-aggressive, they can be shy and quick, especially when newly introduced to an enclosure. Regular handling is not recommended, as it can be stressful for many individuals. However, with time and minimal disturbance, some skinks may become accustomed to their keeper and even take food from feeding tongs. This species can be kept singly or in small groups, though adult males should not be housed together due to territorial behavior.

Routine maintenance includes daily spot cleaning and regular monitoring of temperature and humidity. Substrate should be replaced every two to three months or as needed. Common health issues include metabolic bone disease due to inadequate UVB or calcium supplementation and dehydration caused by insufficient humidity. Maintaining proper environmental conditions and nutrition is key to preventing these problems.

With their vivid coloration, engaging behavior, and manageable care requirements, Emerald Tree Skinks make a rewarding display species for keepers who can provide a vertically oriented, humid environment and a well-balanced insect diet.
